The Evorel patch only needs to be replaced twice per week. The ingredient released is estradiol, which emulates the female sex hormone oestrogen. WHAT IS EVOREL:

Evorel is a type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), used to treat symptoms of menopause. Unlike most HRT treatments which involve daily tablets, Evorel is a patch which gradually releases hormones into the body. This type of treatment would be suitable for you if you have difficulty swallowing tablets, or if you have trouble remembering to take a tablet every day. The Evorel patch only needs to be replaced twice per week. The ingredient released is estradiol, which emulates the female sex hormone oestrogen. Evorel is available in four different strengths: 25mcg, 50mcg, 75mcg and 100mcg.

During the menopause, the production of oestrogen in a woman’s ovaries gradually stops. This deficiency can lead to a number of symptoms, including hot flushes, depression, sleep problems, dryness and osteoporosis. If these symptoms are sufficiently severe, you may be prescribed Evorel in order to supplement the body’s oestrogen levels. Evorel should only be used to treat osteoporosis if other treatments have already been tried.

If you have had a hysterectomy (an operation to remove the uterus), oestrogen is the only hormone you will be required to replace. If you have not had your uterus removed, you will be prescribed a progestogen medicine alongside Evorel. This is because when oestrogen levels alone are increased, the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) will grow excessively. This will substantially increase your risk of complications such as endometrial cancer. If you have not had a hysterectomy, you may instead be prescribed another medicine which provides combined HRT.

All women go through the menopause. This usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. As you approach this age, your ovaries will produce less and less oestrogen. This has the effect of stopping the menstrual cycle, but the change in hormone levels can lead to several symptoms which may have a substantial impact on day-to-day life. Physical symptoms include hot flushes (a spontaneous heat that spreads throughout the body, leading to blushing, sweating and an unusually strong heartbeat), night sweats and dryness of the eyes or vagina. The hormonal change can also cause distressing psychological effects such as irritability, insomnia and depression.

Experiences with menopausal symptoms vary significantly depending on the individual. They can begin multiple years prior to the menopause itself, and remain for many years. Women will, on average, experience symptoms for about four years.

Evorel will provide relief from menopausal symptoms within a few weeks of daily use. As your body adjusts to Evorel, you may notice breakthrough bleeding or spotting. Talk to your GP if this continues after more than a few months of treatment. HRT should only be necessary as a relatively short-term treatment as your body adjusts to the menopause. You should review your HRT with your GP at least once each year and have regular gynaecological checkups.

SIDE EFFECTS OF USING EVOREL PATCHES:

  • Skin irritation (itching, redness) at patch application site.
  • Nausea.
  • Headache.
  • Breakthrough bleeding or vaginal discharge.
  • Breast tenderness or soreness.

Most of these side effects will disappear with continued use. Consult a doctor if the side effects are severe or persistent. Read the package leaflet carefully before using Evorel patches. The package leaflet will also tell you that all women using HRT have a slightly increased risk of serious side effects such as breast cancer and thrombosis compared with women who don’t use HRT.

BENEFITS OF HRT PATCHES:

What makes HRT patches different to tablets and gels? The benefits of using the patch are not vastly different to taking HRT in tablet form, so to some extent, it depends on your preference. The patch contains hormones that are absorbed through the skin, allowing you to receive hormone replacement without taking tablets by mouth – and likewise for the gel. Some doctors believe it’s preferable for hormones to be absorbed through the skin, thereby avoiding the liver.

Evorel patches contain only oestrogen, rather than a combination of oestrogen and progesterone, and so are only recommended if taken in tandem with progesterone, or for women who’ve had a hysterectomy. This is because oestrogen-only HRT is linked to an increased risk of endometrial cancer.

HRT patch reviews claim that Evorel patches are “very strong and stick well”, as well as being smaller than most other HRT patches.

EACH EVOREL PATCH CONTAINS:

Depending on what strength you’re prescribed, Evorel patches contain varying levels of estradiol (hemihydrate).
